Michigan Fitness Association: What is CrossFit?

CrossFit has existed for over twenty years, but many people still don’t know what it is. Founded by former gymnast Greg Glassman in 2000, CrossFit is a workout routine that focuses on varied, high-intensity functional movements. It is typically conducted in specialized CrossFit gyms, also known as “boxes.”

CrossFit is meant to improve overall fitness by mixing weight training, calisthenics, and endurance training in as many variations as possible. The idea is that the human body adapts to repeated movements over time, leading to plateaus in fitness gains. Varied workouts challenge different muscle groups and energy systems, helping to prevent these plateaus and promote continuous improvement. CrossFit gyms offer a “Workout of the Day” (WOD) designed to combine workouts in interesting and varied ways.

The purported functionality of CrossFit exercises is a large part of the routine’s appeal. According to CrossFit professionals, exercises mimic everyday movements like squatting, lifting, pulling, and pushing. Functional movements, the CrossFit community says, are important because they support the development of   fitness, strength, agility, and coordination that translates into improved performance in various physical activities and everyday tasks.

The high-intensity element of CrossFit serves many purposes. The most obvious is that high-intensity training improves muscular fitness  and aerobic capacity High-intensity workouts are also designed to maximize results in a shorter amount of time which is necessary for those taking hour-long CrossFit classes at a certified gym.
