The Basics of Yoga

Some of the most popular forms of yoga in the U.S. are yin, hot, and somatic yoga, each with its own unique style.

Yin yoga involves holding slow-paced poses for 1 to 5 minutes or longer, targeting deep connective tissues such as fascia and ligaments rather than muscles. It enhances joint circulation and flexibility. Practiced seated or lying down with props for relaxation, yin yoga incorporates breathing and mindfulness for a meditative experience.

Hot yoga is practiced in a heated, humid room (95-105°F / 35-40°C) that mimics India’s climate. Benefits include increased flexibility from warmed muscles, detoxification through sweating, cardiovascular improvements, and enhanced mental focus and relaxation.

Somatic yoga is a practice that focuses on the internal experience of movement and body awareness. It emphasizes sensing and feeling the body from within rather than achieving specific poses or shapes. Somatic yoga often includes gentle, slow movements designed to release tension, improve flexibility, and enhance mindfulness.
